Welcome to New Impact

A Healthy Lifestyle Program

Children’s Hospital of Greenville Health System (GHS) offers a healthy, comprehensive and unique weight management program for children up to age 21. Using a multidisciplinary team approach, we empower children to develop active, healthy lifestyles by focusing on the eating and exercise behavior of the entire family.

At your initial consultation, you’ll meet with a physician to find the best fit for you. Through our partnerships with Upstate YMCAs, Clemson University and Furman University, we are excited to offer you the following services. These will be individualized according to your needs, because we recognize that in the battle against obesity every family has different challenges.

Program Features

  • Physician supervised weight management
  • Group and/or individual visits with registered dietitian
  • Individual visits with YMCA wellness coach
  • Two-month YMCA family membership at a reduced rate
  • Psychology visits to address emotional aspects of weight gain
  • Monthly group cooking classes
  • Body composition scan available (additional fee)
  • Surgical weight management consultation and referral for interested adolescents

Who Is Eligible

    For Parents:

    • Your child must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than or equal to the 85th percentile or have experienced rapid weight gain crossing percentiles.
    • Increased BMI is an indicator of an increased risk of adult-type health problems. (To calculate your child’s BMI, go to http://nccd.cdc.gov/dnpabmi/Calculator.aspx/)
    • If your child meets the above criteria, ask your physician about New Impact or call our office at (864) 675-3488.

    For Physicians:

    • New Impact is the initial point of referral for the majority of patients up to 21 years old who are obese, overweight or crossing weight  percentiles, including patients who may be interested in pursuing bariatric intervention at ProTeens (a surgical weight-loss program for teens ages 14-21).
    • New Impact works closely with the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology to optimally manage patients and their co-morbidities. We've developed a referral algorithm for these patients that makes the referral process seamless.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will this program last?
A: Most families complete the program within 6 months, but we individualize New Impact to meet each family’s needs. Patients who are interested in surgical weight management are followed for a longer period of time.

Q: What should I expect at my initial visit?
A: The initial visit with our pediatrician serves as an assessment for clearance prior to starting our weight management program. If for any reason you are not ready to begin, we will help you create an alternate plan. If you are ready to start, you next visit will be with our dietitian.

Q: How is the program structured?
A:During our weight management program you will meet with the New Impact dietitian, a YMCA wellness coach, and with our physician for accountability visits and goal setting. Healthy goals will be individualized for your child and family. Psychologist visits are available for families who need those services.

Q: What should I bring to my initial visit?
A: Please bring all completed new patient forms to your initial visit, along with your insurance card and copies of any lab work done in the last year..

Q: How much does the program cost?
A: We no longer have a program fee. You will be charged a co-pay, based on your insurance, for physician and psychologist visits.  You will also be responsible for your insurance deductible.

The reduced rate YMCA family membership costs $60, payable at participating YMCAs. This includes a 2-month family membership and 5 wellness coach visits for the New Impact patient for the purpose of education and goal setting. This part of the program is optional; however it is considered a requirement for our surgical candidates.

Q: Are parents or guardians required to participate in the program?

A: Yes!  We focus on including the whole family in our program to help the family system create a healthy lifestyle together. Parents or guardians will be weighed at every visit with their child, and they will also receive goals along with their child.

Q: Will I be charged if I do not cancel my appointment within 24 hours of the appointment?
A: Possibly, GHS Policy states that we reserve the right to charge for appointments that are not cancelled. We take every situation into consideration prior to charging any fee.
