Meet Our Child Life Specialists

Kristen Capps is a Certified Child Life Specialist covering general inpatient pediatrics, pediatric intensive care, and epilepsy monitoring. She earned her undergraduate degree in Child and Family Development from Georgia Southern University, and she is currently seeking a graduate degree in Human Services Counseling with a Marriage and Family Therapy emphasis. Kristen has been a Child Life Specialist since 2013 and was first hired as the PRN specialist. She covered mostly in inpatient and outpatient hematology/oncology, general pediatric inpatient units, pediatric intensive care unit, and pre-op.

Billy Chrouser is a Certified Child Life Specialist in outpatient surgery and gastroenterology (at Patewood). He earned his undergraduate degree in Social Work from Warner University and his graduate degree in Child Development and Childcare with an emphasis in Child Life from the University of Pittsburgh. Billy has been a Child Life Specialist since 2000 and has served in many areas, including inpatient pediatrics, outpatient dialysis, inpatient rehab, inpatient surgery, and outpatient hematology/oncology.

Emily Durham is a Certified Child Life Specialist and the supervisor of the Child Life Program. She earned her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and Psychology from Guilford College and her graduate degree in Child Life from Mills College. Emily has been a Child Life Specialist since 1999 and has served in many areas including inpatient hematology/oncology, pediatric intensive care, and radiology.

Kym Hoffman is a Certified Child Life Specialist and Certified Instructor of Infant Massage currently serving in the Children's Emergency Center at Greenville Memorial Hospital. She earned her undergraduate degree in Multidisciplinary studies (Genetics and Sociology) from North Carolina State University and her graduate degree in Human Development and Family Studies with an emphasis in Child Life from Colorado State University. Kym has been a Child Life Specialist since 2007 and has served in many areas, including neonatal intensive care, pediatric intensive care, general pediatric inpatient/epilepsy monitory unit, rapid treatment/anesthesia unit, emergency room, and outpatient clinics.

Lyndsey Hoffman is a Certified Child Life Specialist at the BI-LO Charities Children’s Cancer Center and the director of Camp Courage. She earned her undergraduate degree in psychology and sociology with an emphasis in social work from St. Norbert College in Green Bay, Wisconsin and her graduate degree in Child Life from the University of La Verne in La Verne, California. Lyndsey has been a Child Life Specialist since 2012 and has served in many areas, including inpatient units covering hematology/oncology, pediatric intensive care, and general pediatrics.

Cathy Howell is our Child Life Assistant at the BI-LO Charities Children’s Cancer Center. Her educational background is in early childhood education, theology and psychology. 

Lindsey Metz is a Certified Child Life Specialist for the inpatient hematology/oncology and surgery units. Lindsey earned her undergraduate degree in Child Development with a concentration in Child Life from the University of Alabama and her graduate degree from Liberty University in Human Services Counseling. Lindsey has been a Child Life Specialist since 2013 and has experience working in multiple inpatient and outpatient areas of the hospital.

Kelli Pellerin is a Certified Child Life Specialist in the Children’s Emergency Center. She earned her undergraduate degree from Southwestern University. Kelli has been a Child Life Specialist since 1991.

Sarah Pierce is a Certified Child Life Specialist for Children’s Hospital Supportive Care and Pediatric HIV Clinic. She earned her undergraduate degree in Child Development and Family Relations from East Carolina University and her graduate degree in Pediatric Recreation Therapy from University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Sarah has served in many areas, including inpatient areas, Pediatric Clinic, Children’s Emergency Center, and Outpatient Surgery.

Mitzi Privette is a Certified Child Life Specialist II that covers all of the Pediatric Outpatient Specialty Clinics at Children’s Hospital Outpatient Center on the Patewood Medical Campus. She earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology and her graduate degree in Education from the University of South Carolina. Mitzi has experience working in multiple inpatient and outpatient areas of the hospital.

Erin Shaffer is a Certified Child Life Specialist in the pre-op surgery unit at Greenville Memorial Hospital. She earned her undergraduate degree in Family Studies with an emphasis in Early Childhood Education from Messiah College. Erin has been a Child Life Specialist since 2000 and has served in many areas, including neonatal intensive care, pediatric intensive care, inpatient pediatrics, and Children’s Emergency Center.

Jane Shaffer is a Certified Child Life Specialist in the Children’s Emergency Center at Greenville Memorial Hospital. She earned her undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University in both Early Childhood Education and Human & Organizational Development. Jane has been a Child Life Specialist since 2010 and has served in many areas, including radiology. In August 2013, Jane was named Caregiver of the Year by Children’s Hospital.

Taylor Stathes, MS, CTRS, CCLS is a Certified Child Life Specialist in radiology and pediatric sedation services. Taylor is currently the handler for one of our facility dogs, Vivitar (Vivi). She earned her undergraduate degree in Recreational Therapy from Clemson University and her graduate degree in Child Life from the University of La Verne. Taylor has been a Child Life Specialist since 2015 and is in her first role as a CCLS.  

Memory Stein is a Certified Child Life Specialist for Children’s Hospital Supportive Care. She earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Furman University and her graduate degree in Child and Family Studies from the University of Southern Mississippi. Memory has been a Child Life Specialist since 2007 and has served in many areas, including hematology/oncology inpatient unit, pediatric intensive care and general pediatric inpatient units.

Morgan Vaughan is a Certified Child Life Specialist working with school age and adolescent inpatient general pediatrics and the pediatric intermediate unit. She earned her undergraduate degree in Child and Family Development with an emphasis in Child Life from Georgia Southern University. Morgan has served in many areas, including Children’s Emergency Center.

Laurel Wanner is a Certified Child Life Specialist with the division of child abuse and neglect. Laurel is currently the handler for one of our facility dogs, Kenzie. She earned her undergraduate degree in Therapeutic Recreation from the University of Florida. Laurel has been a child life specialist since 1985 and has served in many areas of pediatric care including hematology/oncology, inpatient areas, outpatient surgery, neonatal intensive care, pediatric intensive care, and outpatient clinics.
