Bereavement Program

When a child dies, a family's world as they have known it no longer exists. The pain is intense and each person's journey of grief is unique. Grief does not follow a map, but is influenced by previous losses, current life situations and the support system that is available to you.

Children's Hospital staff recognizes the pain a family endures when a child dies.  No one can take the pain away, however, many families have found it helpful to have support in dealing with the death of a child.

A Children’s Hospital Bereavement Program was developed to provide grief support to families who experience the death of a child treated at Children’s Hospital.  The program provides for keepsakes for parents and age-appropriate memory bags for siblings along with counseling and support.  The program also supports the staff that cares for the families.  Each year the Bereavement Program sponsors a remembrance ceremony that is conducted by Children’s Hospital staff to remember children who have died while in our care.
